  • WAS Quarterback #18
Marcus Mariota (pectoral) has been ruled out for Week 1 against the Buccaneers.
Mariota has a strained pectoral, and the 30-year-old signal-caller won’t be available for the opener against the Bucs. That means Jeff Driskel will operate as the backup QB to Jalen Daniels to begin the year.
  • WAS Guard #76
Commander signed G Sam Cosmi to a four-year contract extension.
Cosmi, the team’s best offensive lineman, was graded by Pro Football Focus as last year’s 12th best pass blocking guard. He was top-5 in run blocking, per PFF. Cosmi’s presence will be important as Jayden Daniels develops into an NFL starter.
  • WAS Tight End #86
Zach Ertz is listed as the Commanders’ No. 1 tight end on the team’s Week 1 depth chart.
Ben Sinnott, meanwhile, is listed as the TE3 behind Ertz and John Bates. Taken in the second round of the 2024 NFL Draft, Sinnott appears to have a ways to go before he works as Washington’s primary pass-catching tight end. Ertz, 33, who has a long history with Commanders offensive coordinator Kliff Kingsbury, should do most of the tight end route running to start the season.
  • WAS Wide Receiver #85
Commanders signed WR Noah Brown, formerly of the Texans.
Washington wasted no time in securing wide receiver help for their newly anointed franchise quarterback after trading away Jahan Dotson earlier in the week. The team signed former Texans wide receiver Noah Brown to the active roster, giving him the chance to immediately step into the WR2 role for a team largely lacking proven options behind Terry McLaurin. Brown might start slow considering he’ll be learning a new offense in less than two weeks prior to their Week 1 game, but he has proven to be a capable receiver at the NFL level after putting up three games of 20 PPR points or more last season with the Texans on just three games with a snap rate over 80%.
  • WAS Quarterback #11
Commanders re-signed QB Sam Hartman to their practice squad.
Hartman was solid in preseason action, but was never likely to make the Washington roster. He was also unlikely to leave the organization even after being waived by the Commanders on final cut day. Washington will try and develop Hartman into a backup quarterback.
  • FA Tight End #85
Commanders waived/released TE Cole Turner, WR Kaz Allen, C Ricky Stromberg, CB Chigozie Anusiem, OT Armani Taylor-Prioleau, S Kendell Brooks, WR Mitchell Tinsley, WR Martavis Bryant, C Cameron Tom, CB Tariq Castro-Fields, WR Brycen Tremayne, T Braeden Daniels, WR Davion Davis, CB Nick Whiteside II, OG Julian Good-Jones, RB Michael Wiley, DE Jalen Harris, CB AJ Woods, QB Sam Hartman, DE K.J. Henry, DE Justin Hollins, DE Andre Jones Jr, RB Austin Jones, CB Kyu Blu Kelly, QB Trace McSorley, DT Haggai Ndubuisi, OT David Nwaogwugwu, CB James Pierre, LB Anthony Pittman, DT Benning Potoa’e, S Sheldrick Redwine, RB Chris Rodgriguez Jr., WR Marcus Rosemy-Jacksaint, and LB Chapelle Russell.
The former fifth-round wasn’t long for Washington after the team signed Zach Ertz and drafted Ben Sinnott. Heading into his third season, another team could take a flier on Turner in hopes of developing him as he’s only 24 years old. The move clears the runway for Sinnott to serve as a rotational TE2 to start his rookie campaign.
  • FA Quarterback #11
    Commanders released QB Sam Hartman.
A six-year college quarterback, Hartman in April signed as an undrafted free agent and didn’t make much of an impact during summer practices. Hartman was solid in the preseason, completing 13 of his 14 attempts for 86 yards, mostly against second and third team defenders. Hartman could land on a practice squad in the coming days.
  • FA Wide Receiver #88
    Commanders released WR Martavis Bryant.
The 32-year-old randomly resurfaced to score a preseason touchdown, but it’s no surprise he couldn’t make the Commanders’ 53-man roster after over a half decade away from the league. It’s a good story, but the odds remain extremely long Bryant even lands practice squad work.
  • WAS Quarterback #5
Commanders HC Dan Quinn said Jayden Daniels will not play in Sunday’s preseason game against the Patriots.
The next we’ll see of Daniels will come in Week 1 in Tampa Bay. The No. 2 overall pick and 2023 Heisman Trophy winner played on just three drives in the preseason, completing 12-of-15 passes for 123 scoreless yards while rushing for 16 yards and one score. Daniels is carrying all the hype one would expect with a player of his pedigree and resumé. Currently going outside of the top 10 quarterbacks in most fantasy drafts, Daniels could have top-five fantasy upside if he’s able to put everything together in his first season as a starter.
  • WAS Wide Receiver #12
ESPN’s John Keim writes Luke McCaffrey “has not emerged as an obvious top-four wideout [for the Commanders] to open the season.”
This shouldn’t come as a surprise. McCaffrey was a consensus Day 3 pick by draft experts and wound up being taken No. 100 overall. The five-year prospect has only been playing receiver for two seasons, and didn’t face the stiffest of competition at Rice. McCaffrey’s elite family bloodlines and athleticism have made him an interesting name to monitor for fantasy managers, but it doesn’t sound like he’s anywhere close to earning a starting gig. Olamide Zaccheaus and Dyami Brown seem to be the No. 2 and No. 3 receivers in Washington for the time being.
