  • NE Tight End #85
Henry was a full participant in practice to open the week and hasn’t suffered any setbacks, so he is good to go for Week 1 and shouldn’t play with any restrictions. The Patriots’ offense is a nightmare on paper, but the negative game-script should keep the pass attempts flowing for four quarters. Henry will serve as a reliable check-down option for Jacoby Brissett, keeping him in the TE2 ranks for Week 1.
  • NE Running Back #4
The Patriots listed him as questionable for Week 1. Gibson popped up on the injury report on Thursday, suggesting the hip issue occurred during practice. He was on the field on Friday and told reporters his hip responded well to the reps. He will likely get a questionable tag heading into the weekend, but all signs point to the free agent addition suiting up on Sunday. The Patriots are massive underdogs to the Bengals, which should result in plenty of pass attempts from Jacoby Brissett as his team plays from behind. That will keep Gibson in the RB4 mix for his first game with New England.
  • NE Running Back #4
After being a full participant on Wednesday, Gibson was added to Thursday’s injury report. If he can practice on Friday, he’ll presumably be good to go for Sunday’s game against the Bengals, but he’ll be a risky bet as far as fantasy is concerned. With Rhamondre Stevenson presumably set to handle the majority of touches out of the Patriots’ backfield, Gibson is best left on fantasy benches until we get a better sense of his role in the offense.
  • NE Defensive Tackle #90
According to Fowler, the Patriots don’t want to rush Barmore’s recovery and won’t force him on the field until he’s fully ready to go. Barmore was diagnosed with blood clots back in late July and was placed on the reserve/NFI list during roster cutdowns. Barmore totaled a career-high 64 tackles and 8.5 sacks last season and was recently signed to a four-year contract extension. His absence would be a tough blow to a Patriots defense that ranked 15th last season and allowed the seventh-fewest yards per game.
  • NE Tight End #85
Henry suffered a foot injury a few weeks ago and his availability for Week 1 seemed to be at risk. Per the first injury report of the season, Henry should be good to go. Henry saved a quiet 2023 season with six touchdowns courtesy of a strong red zone role in New England’s flailing passing attack. With Jacoby Brissett at the helm to start the year, Henry will need to subsist on a large share of the end zone looks to maintain his TE2 status.
  • NE Quarterback #14
Drake Maye was making a late preseason push to win the job after a solid performance in his final outing against the Commanders. Head coach Jerod Mayo went so far as to say that Maye has played better than Brissett in camp/the preseason but also noted that the full body of work both quarterbacks put in all offseason would be factored in. Both Brissett and Maye face the unenviable task of playing behind a dreadful offensive line and throwing to subpar playmakers. Maye will get his chance in due time, but it will be Brissett’s show to open the season. He projects as a low-end QB2 and shouldn’t be counted on outside of 2QB/superflex leagues.
  • NE Quarterback #10
“A decision has been made, just not communicated,” Mayo said. It will either by Drake Maye or Jacoby Brissett under center against the Bengals in the opener, and while Brissett seemed like the favorite coming into the preseason, it now appears that Maye — the third-overall selection this April — has a good chance of being under center for that contest. Even if Brissett does get the nod, he’s just keeping the seat warm for Maye, and the rookie QB will all but assuredly get the majority of snaps for New England this year.
  • NE Defensive Tackle #90
Safety Marte Mapu was placed on injured reserve. Both players have return designations meaning they could take the field later this season. Barmore was diagnosed with blood clots this offseason. There was no timetable for his return when the issue was announced at the start of camp, but the return designation bodes well for his recovery.
  • FA Kicker #37
Something of a swan song terrible pick for erstwhile GM Bill Belichick, Ryland suffered through an ineffective rookie campaign and saw Joey Slye added as veteran depth in May. Slye has now presumably won the job. Kickers tend to begin their careers strangely slow in the NFL, so 24-year-old former fourth-rounder Ryland could quickly revive his fortunes on the workout circuit.
  • FA Quarterback #4
It’s the second year in a row Zappe has been cut loose at final cuts. He’s unlikely to be brought back this time after the Pats signed Jacoby Brissett and used a lottery pick on Drake Maye. 25-year-old Zappe’s 2023 lowlight was a game-sealing pick on a fake snap. Zappe’s phone won’t be ringing off the hook for practice squad/No. 3 help. Also waived/released by the Patriots on Tuesday were S Joshuah Bledsoe, T Kellen Diesch, OL Liam Fornadel, LB Joe Giles-Harris, RB Kevin Harris, RB Terrell Jennings, LB Kobe Jones, WR Matt Landers, G Atonio Mafi, DE Jotham Russell, K Chad Ryland, S A.J. Thomas, CB Shaun Wade, WR David Wallis and TE Mitchell Wilcox.
