Smith has rejected an outright assignment to Triple-A Louisville and will test the free agent waters after going unclaimed on waivers. The 29-year-old first baseman will be ineligible for the postseason if he lands with a contender in the coming weeks.

Hunter Greene (elbow) threw a bullpen session on Thursday.

It was Greene’s first bullpen session since hitting the injured list back in mid-August with right elbow inflammation. The hard-throwing 25-year-old, who will throw again over the weekend, has a decent shot at making it back before the regular season wraps up, but the Reds are going to proceed with an abundance of caution during his ramp-up process.

Reds manager David Bell told reporters Matt McLain (shoulder, ribs) has been cleared to resume baseball activities.

McLain is no longer dealing with any issues associated with his surgically-repaired left shoulder, but has been dealing with a stress reaction in his rib cage. The 25-year-old middle infielder is targeting a late-season return to Cincinnati, but has just a few weeks left to make it back before the regular season wraps up. The hope for fantasy managers is that he’ll be a full-go heading into 2025.

Jeimer Candelario (toe) hasn’t resumed baseball activities.

Candelario hit the injured list back in late August with a fractured left big toe and the fact that he’s yet to resume any sort of baseball activities isn’t an encouraging sign for his late-season availability.

Reds manager David Bell told reporters Christian Encarnacion-Strand (wrist) has been cleared to resume baseball activities.

Encarnacion-Strand underwent season-ending wrist surgery back in mid-July to repair ligament damage in his right wrist. The 24-year-old former top prospect should have a normal offseason and be a full-go heading into spring training.

Ty France hit a solo homer while going 2-for-3 in a 1-0 win for the Reds on Thursday over the Astros.

France’s homer was the only offense for the Reds on Thursday, but it was enough with Rhett Lowder and the Cincinnati bullpen blanking the Houston lineup. France has been streaky for his entire career, and he’s on the right side of that right now with 9 hits over his last 15 at-bats. The question is whether he can keep it going on a consistent basis; something he hasn’t done the last two years.

Alexis Díaz didn’t allow a run while picking up a save against the Astros on Thursday.

Díaz didn’t allow a hit and picked up a strikeout. The right-hander is now up to 26 saves on the year, and his ERA is lowered to a still-disappointing 4.56 on the campaign.

Rhett Lowder threw 6 1/3 scoreless innings in a 1-0 victory for the Reds over the Astros on Thursday, but he didn’t qualify for a decision.

The only issue with Lowder’s start was another four walks; giving him eight in his first two outings. He also allowed only four hits, however, and it’s tough to complain about six scoreless frames in your second MLB outing. The seventh pick of the 2024 draft will need to show better command in the long-term, but his track record at Wake Forest and in the minors suggests he’ll do just that. In the meantime, he’s forged a 0.87 ERA over his 10 1/3 innings to begin his career, and that’s pretty good. He’ll be on the bump again Tuesday against the Cardinals.

Reds manager David Bell said that Christian Encarnacion-Strand (hand) has resumed baseball activities.

The 24-year-old first baseman has already been ruled out for the season, but it’s nice to hear that he’s already on the path to getting back into baseball shape. He should be ready to go for the start of 2025.

Cincinnati.com’s Charlie Goldsmith reports that Reds manager David Bell said “Matt McLain is pain-free,” and “will get back to baseball activities and will see how he progresses.”

There is still some hope that McLain can make it back this season, but the odds are looking longer by the day. It’s nice to hear that McLain is pain-free, but he will need to start a rehab assignment before that even becomes a consideration. It’s a situation to monitor over the next couple of weeks.
