  • CAR Tight End #82
Fellow tight end Ian Thomas was also ruled out. Head coach Dave Canales told reporters rookie tight end Ja’Tavion Sanders will draw the start. His biggest competition for snaps is Jordan Matthews, the former wide receiver. That should result in plenty of reps for Sanders in his first game. The abundance of routes puts Sanders in the streaming TE2 conversation versus the Saints.
  • CAR Tight End #82
Both Tremble and backup TE Ian Thomas (calf) missed the Panthers’ first two practices this week, putting their Sunday availability in doubt. Fourth-round rookie TE Ja’Tavion Sanders is theoretically in line for starting duties in his first-ever NFL game.
  • CAR Tackle #72
The Panthers also restructured DT Shy Tuttle’s deal, freeing up $10.7 million total. The team was more than $4.5 million in the red prior to the moves, which will allow the front office to address depth issues in-season.
  • CAR Tight End #82
Tremble told reporters on Monday that he was hopeful to play in Week 1 against the Saints. However, a DNP for the Panthers’ first practice session plus the addition of a back injury on the report don’t paint an optimistic picture. Fellow tight end Ian Thomas (calf) has been ruled out already. If Tremble follows suit, rookie Ja’Tavion Sanders will get the start and could dominate the snaps in his first NFL game. Sanders would be a low-floor TE2 if Tremble is ruled out.
  • CAR Tight End #82
When asked about the hamstring injury that kept him out for much of training camp, Tremble said, “I feel good.” The fourth-year tight end is listed atop the Panthers’ depth chart to start the season and has caught 62 passes for 548 yards and seven touchdowns in 49 career games. Even if he’s active, Tremble won’t have much fantasy upside to open the year.
  • FA Wide Receiver #88
Marshall was a second-round pick of the Panthers back in 2021. The former LSU product caught 19 passes for 139 scoreless yards last season and totaled 28-490-1 in 2022 — his most productive season to date. He’s been gradually phased out over the last two seasons and clearly wasn’t a fit for head coach Dave Canales’ new-look offense. Marshall will have plenty of suitors on the open market as he looks to restart his career elsewhere.
  • FA Quarterback #16
The 24-year-old UDFA out of Louisville threw for a boatload of preseason yards. NFL Network’s Mike Garafolo reports he is a “strong practice squad candidate,” perhaps in Charlotte.
  • FA Tight End #49
Franks has been trying to catch on with a team as a tight end since changing positions back in 2022. Franks didn’t take a regular-season snap in 2023 and could land back on the Panthers’ practice squad if he clears waivers.
  • CAR Running Back #24
This means Brooks, the 46th pick in the 2024 NFL Draft, will miss at least the first four weeks of the regular season. ESPN’s David Newton said the team is “bringing Brooks along slowly, feeling good about Chuba Hubbard and Miles Sanders but believing Brooks is the future.” Brooks tore his ACL last November. For now, Hubbard is expected to be Carolina’s lead back, with Sanders chipping in here and there. After a ramp-up period when he is activated from the PUP list, Brooks should have every chance to serve as the team’s RB1. Carolina coaches have talked up Brooks’ pass-catching prowess, suggesting an eventual three-down role for the rookie.
  • CAR Cornerback #30
Jackson has appeared in 34 games for the Seahawks over the last two seasons while making 21 starts. The fifth-year corner earned a PFF coverage grade of 76.9 while playing on 474 defensive snaps last season and provides nice depth for a Panthers secondary that is in need of help. In return, the Seahawks get rookie linebacker Michael Barrett, who the Panthers selected in the seventh round of this year’s draft. Barrett has totaled two tackles this preseason and will likely contribute on special teams to start.
