José Herrera left Friday’s game in the fifth inning after being hit on the top of his helmet with Kyle Tucker’s backswing.

Tucker’s bat came right down on the crown of Herrera’s helmet, seemingly leaving him dazed. Adrian del Castillo took over as Arizona’s catcher. Andrew Knizner would likely get a callup if Herrera lands on the concussion IL.

Diamondbacks activated 2B Ketel Marte from the 10-day injured list.

Marte missed 2 1/2 weeks with his sprained ankle. The absence killed his long shot bid for NL MVP, but he should yet wind up on most voters’ ballots. Luis Guillorme and Kevin Newman will see much less playing time with Marte back.

Diamondbacks optioned OF Jorge Barrosa to Triple-A Reno.

Barrosa went 1-for-7 in five days with the Diamondbacks.

Diamondbacks manager Torey Lovullo told reporters Ketel Marte (ankle) could potentially return during their impending series against the Astros.

Arizona kicks off a three-game series on Friday night at Minute Maid Park and it sounds like there’s a possibility Marte could be back in the lineup at some point during the road trip. The 30-year-old fantasy superstar has been ramping up baseball activities over the last few days as he makes his way back from a left ankle sprain that sent him to the injured list in late August. His return will certainly provide a lift for the Diamondbacks, and fantasy managers, as he was in the midst of an MVP-caliber season prior to the injury.

ARI Starting Pitcher #29

Merrill Kelly gave up two runs over seven innings and struck out eight in a no-decision against the Giants on Thursday.

After struggling to keep the ball in the park against the Dodgers in his last start, Kelly was very effective during Thursday’s start, as he didn’t allow a homer or a walk in his seven frames. The right-hander only allowed a two-run single in the fourth, and outside of that dealt with little trouble against the San Francisco lineup. The outing lowers his ERA to 4.08 on the year, and he’ll try and repeat the outing — and hope for some run support — against the Rangers on Wednesday.

Eugenio Suárez went 2-for-3 with a home run, two runs scored, and a walk in the Diamondbacks’ 6-4 win over the Giants on Wednesday.

Suárez led off the second inning with a solo blast off Hayden Birdsong. After drawing a walk in the third inning, he doubled in the eighth before scoring on a single by Corbin Carroll. The 33-year-old slugger is up to 24 homers while slashing .243/.313/.456 with 87 RBI across 549 plate appearances.
Pavin Smith

Pavin Smith went 1-for-3 with a solo homer, two runs scored, a walk, and a stolen base against the Giants on Wednesday.

Smith took Spencer Bivens deep for a solo homer in the fifth inning to extend Arizona’s lead, only his fourth home run of the season. He later drew a walk in the eighth and stole second before scoring on a groundout. The 28-year-old is hitting .253/.326/.458 with 14 runs scored and 18 RBI across 95 plate appearances on the season.
Zac Gallen

Zac Gallen tossed six scoreless innings with eight strikeouts in a win over the Giants on Wednesday.

Gallen was outstanding on Wednesday, shutting the Giants out over six frames. He scattered four walks and did not allow a hit while striking out eight batters on his way to the win. The 29-year-old right-hander ends the day with a 3.69 ERA, 1.28 WHIP, and a 126/47 K/BB ratio across 127 innings. He’s in line for a matchup against the Rangers in Arizona on Tuesday.

Randal Grichuk went 3-for-5 with two homers and three RBI in leading the Diamondbacks to an 8-7 win over the Giants on Tuesday.

Grichuk is making a big case to play against righties with Lourdes Gurriel Jr. on the shelf. He’s 9-for-15 with four homers and nine RBI in his last five appearances, taking his season OPS from .735 to .828.
Ryne Nelson

Ryne Nelson allowed two runs over 6 2/3 innings and struck out nine versus the Giants in a win Tuesday.

Let the record show that if Jordan Montgomery had only been a very little less bad, Nelson would be in the pen right now. As is, he’s turned in five straight quality starts and nine in his last 11 outings. He hasn’t had a truly bad start since June 26, when he dropped to 5-6 with a 5.69 ERA. He’s 5-0 with a 2.76 ERA since. He’s due to pitch in Houston next.
